Description:
Building on the success of last year’s inaugural program, the Glendale, Pasadena, and Burbank Fire Departments partnered to host the second annual Women’s Fire Academy - a two-day, hands-on introduction to careers in Firefighting and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This year, the Academy expanded significantly, welcoming 70 women from across Southern California, nearly doubling participation from its first year.
Hosted at the Pasadena Jefferson Training Center, the Academy offered participants immersive, skills-based training led by firefighters and paramedics from all three departments. Attendees gained firsthand experience in hose handling, ladder operations, forcible entry, search and rescue, and EMS techniques. Most importantly, the group received mentorship and insight into the physical, technical, and teamwork-driven demands of the fire service.
As communities across Los Angeles County continue to grow and diversify, the need for fire departments to reflect the people they serve has never been more important. Women remain significantly underrepresented in the fire service across the nation. The Women’s Fire Academy aims to change that by creating accessible pathways into Fire and EMS careers and strengthening regional efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the profession.
